Orient Electric Limited delivered a strong performance in the first quarter of FY27, recording year-on-year revenue growth of 23.5% alongside a significant improvement in profitability, despite persistent commodity inflation and supply-chain challenges. The company’s performance was supported by a strong seasonal recovery in its core categories, broad-based portfolio momentum and continued execution of its diversification strategy.

Addressing the company’s Q1 FY27 earnings conference call, Ravindra Singh Negi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Orient Electric, said the quarter benefited from a constructive demand environment. Following a subdued summer in the previous year, cooling demand recovered strongly from mid-April and remained robust through May, supported by healthy liquidity and steady discretionary spending. Demand moderated somewhat towards the end of the quarter.

However, the operating environment remained challenging, with persistent inflation in key commodities, particularly copper and aluminium, rising minimum wages and labour costs, labour availability concerns, higher fuel costs, import delays and geopolitical uncertainty putting pressure on input costs and supply chains.

Negi said the company managed these challenges proactively through disciplined execution, cost management and calibrated pricing actions across segments and categories. The performance reflected the company’s One Orient approach and its 3-wall strategy, which focuses on multiple growth avenues while leveraging synergies across its established business ecosystem, with premiumization, innovation, diversification and operational discipline as key priorities.

Lighting and Switchgear remained important growth engines, delivering 25.4% year-on-year revenue growth. Performance was supported by distribution expansion, portfolio premiumization and market-share gains in consumer lighting. The consumer lighting business grew at a high double-digit rate, accompanied by a meaningful improvement in volume-to-value conversion. The share of high-value luminaires increased to 60%, up 500 basis points from the previous year, reflecting stronger traction in premium categories.

Professional Lighting also continued to gain ground through the execution of street-lighting and façade projects, supported by a healthy pipeline of project enquiries. The company’s emerging businesses, including switches, switchgear and wires, continued to expand. Wires revenue grew by more than 200% year on year, albeit from a small base, while switches and switchgear maintained double-digit growth. Orient Electric continued to strengthen electrician engagement and leverage its existing fans and lighting distribution network to improve cross-selling.

In the Electrical Consumer Durables segment, revenue increased 22.7% year on year to INR 669 crore, driven by strong summer demand and deeper penetration across direct-to-market and multi-distribution channels. Fans recorded high double-digit growth, outperforming peers, supported by distribution initiatives, premiumization and product development. The company’s brushless direct-current (BLDC) fan portfolio grew 36% year on year, while new product launches contributed 30% of fan revenue during the quarter. Premium products accounted for 36% of domestic fan revenue.

The appliances portfolio also maintained its growth trajectory, delivering double-digit growth on the back of demand for heating and garment-care products. Innovation and premiumization remained central to the company’s product strategy. During the peak summer season, Orient Electric promoted its innovation-led fan portfolio, including Aero O2, which the company describes as India’s first oxygen-enriching ceiling fan, alongside its Aerosilent and Ecotech Volt launches. The company also received three Red Dot Design Awards, providing external recognition of its product-design capabilities.

Orient Electric continued to expand its direct-to-market network, adding approximately 3,600 retailers during the quarter. Its Samvad service platform, supported by artificial intelligence-led capabilities, continued to improve service delivery through deeper consumer insights and faster issue resolution. The e-commerce business recorded double-digit growth, supported by a stronger product assortment and healthy consumer traction. Exports also grew at a double-digit rate as the company expanded its presence in international markets.

Operational discipline remained a key focus amid inflationary pressures. The company implemented calibrated price increases across its segments and categories during the quarter. Its Project Sanchay programme generated cost savings of INR 10 crore in Q1 FY27, helping offset some of the pressure from higher input costs.

Gross margin moderated to 29.8% due to commodity inflation. Nevertheless, operating leverage and disciplined cost management supported an improvement in EBITDA margin to 7%, an increase of 102 basis points year on year. Profit before tax after exceptional items rose 79.4% to INR 42.5 crore, while profit after tax increased 79.7% to INR 31.5 crore. The company closed the quarter with working capital at 25 days and a net cash position of INR 133 crore, reflecting continued focus on balance-sheet discipline.

Looking ahead, Negi said Orient Electric remained confident in its growth outlook, supported by its One Orient approach and 3-wall strategy. The company intends to increase the contribution of non-fan categories by expanding its lighting, switchgear and wires businesses, while accelerating premiumization and innovation-led launches across BLDC fans, high-value luminaires and appliances.

Distribution expansion will remain a key priority, alongside the development of e-commerce and quick-commerce channels and further strengthening of the company’s service and digital ecosystem. With the festive season approaching, improving consumer sentiment and normalization of channel inventory, the company expects to sustain its growth momentum and deliver improved performance.
