Techno Electric & Engineering Targets Growth as Power Transmission and Data Centre Demand Accelerate; Secures INR 2,200 Crore Orders

The Electrical Post

Techno Electric & Engineering Company Limited reported strong growth in Q1 FY27, supported by project execution and a robust order pipeline, while highlighting expanding opportunities in India’s power transmission and digital infrastructure sectors.

Techno Electric & Engineering Company Ltd. (TEECL) is one of India’s most important power-infrastructure companies. We are at the top of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), asset ownership and operations and maintenance services in the three industry segments of generation, transmission and distribution. Incorporated in 1963 and headquartered in Kolkata, our operations are spread across India and abroad.

Speaking during the company’s Q1 FY27 earnings conference call, Padam P. Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, Techno Electric & Engineering Company Limited, said revenue for the quarter grew by approximately 25% year-on-year, reflecting strong planning and execution across projects. The company has secured fresh orders worth more than INR 2,200 crore to date, including INR 666 crore during the first quarter and approximately INR 1,530 crore subsequently. It has also emerged as L1 in bids worth another INR 2,100 crore.

Gupta said India is entering what he described as the country’s largest power and digital infrastructure buildout, with Techno Electric pursuing growth through two key engines—power transmission and digital infrastructure. The company’s power transmission order book comprises large and complex high-voltage station solutions and transmission projects for customers including Power Grid, Adani Energy, IndiGrid and leading state utilities. More than 650 engineering and commercial professionals are currently supporting project execution across multiple states and voltage classes.

Transmission investment to create significant opportunity

The company sees a strong investment cycle emerging in India’s transmission infrastructure. According to Gupta, India is expected to invest approximately INR 9 lakh crore in transmission infrastructure between FY26 and FY32, driven in large part by the rapid expansion of renewable energy.

The increasing renewable-energy base is also creating a greater requirement for transmission capacity to evacuate electricity. Gupta noted that the government has planned an additional INR 50,000 crore expenditure to strengthen interstate transmission facilities. India is also targeting more than 900 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity over the next decade, including around 548 GW of solar and wind capacity, which will require substantial expansion of the transmission network.

At the same time, electricity demand is reaching new highs. India recorded an all-time peak requirement of 271 GW in May 2026, with peak demand projected to reach approximately 480 GW by FY32. Electricity consumption is growing at more than 6% annually, while data centres and broader electrification are adding new categories of demand to the power system.

The nature of transmission projects is also becoming increasingly sophisticated. Alongside conventional evacuation packages, the grid is seeing greater requirements for synchronisers, condensers, dynamic reactive compensation and HVDC corridors. Techno Electric said these technically demanding segments represent attractive opportunities as the share of renewable generation increases.

Another area of focus is digital substations, where protection, control and monitoring are increasingly shifting from conventional copper-based systems to fibre-based technologies. The company said its early positioning in this segment and experience in smart-grid solutions provide an important differentiator as India modernises its power grid.

Data centre demand strengthens Techno Digital's growth opportunity

Alongside its traditional power business, Techno Electric is witnessing strong demand for its digital infrastructure platform. The company said customer demand has exceeded its initial expectations, prompting it to increase the designed IT load capacity of its Chennai data centre campus.

According to Gupta, demand in Chennai has accelerated over the past two months, with discussions increasingly involving larger customers, larger capacity blocks, longer tenures and faster delivery requirements. The company attributed the shift partly to changing deployment patterns in the Asia-Pacific region and limited available capacity in Mumbai, which is resulting in demand moving towards other Indian cities, with Chennai emerging as a major beneficiary.

The company also pointed to the tax holiday provided in the latest Budget for cloud operators serving global customers through Indian data centres as an additional factor supporting investment. Chennai's connectivity, including its location on the East Coast, low-latency connectivity to Singapore and five active submarine cable systems, further strengthens its position as a data centre destination.

Techno Electric said approximately 150 MW of aggregate IT load demand is currently under active discussion with global hyperscale, AI infrastructure and enterprise customers. The pipeline includes six opportunities exceeding 3 MW, while more than 30 opportunities are currently open at various stages of maturity.

During the quarter, the company signed 10 new customer logos across colocation, cloud and interconnection, including two leading Indian telecom carriers. The Chennai campus is TIA-942-B certified for both design and constructed facility and has also received IGBC Gold Green Building certification. The facility has operated on approximately 97% renewable energy in recent months and was designed with a PUE of 1.35 and 75% lower water consumption than a conventional facility, according to the company.
Expansion across key Indian markets

Techno Electric is also expanding its digital infrastructure footprint beyond Chennai. The company has signed an MoU with a global hyperscaler for a 2 MW data centre facility in Andhra Pradesh, while its Kolkata and Noida campuses are progressing.

Noida received building-plan approval in July, with major long-lead equipment under manufacturing and commissioning targeted for the final quarter of FY27. Kolkata is currently in the foundation stage. The company's Gurgaon facility is fully occupied, while its Mumbai facility has been commissioned and is onboarding customers.

The company is also building towards more than 100 edge locations across 23 states, while cloud and managed services are already operational from its Gurgaon EDC. It is preparing for a GPU-as-a-Service offering at its Noida Edge facility against an anchor public-sector commitment.

The broader Indian data centre market is also expanding rapidly. According to industry data cited by the company, India added 258 MW of data centre capacity during the first half of the calendar year, up 59% from the corresponding period last year, taking operational capacity to approximately 1.8 GW. Capacity is projected to exceed 7 GW by 2030, while cumulative investment commitments in Indian data centres have crossed USD 126 billion.

Q1 FY27 financial performance

On a standalone basis, Techno Electric reported revenue from operations of INR 641 crore in Q1 FY27, compared with INR 514 crore in Q1 FY26, representing approximately 25% growth. EBITDA increased to INR 89 crore from INR 79 crore, while EBITDA margin stood at 13.8%. Profit after tax was INR 96 crore.

At the consolidated level, revenue from operations stood at INR 630 crore, compared with INR 525 crore a year earlier, representing approximately 20% growth. Consolidated EBITDA was INR 99 crore against INR 92 crore in Q1 FY26, with an EBITDA margin of 15.79%. Profit after tax stood at INR 93 crore, while consolidated EPS was INR 8.02.

With a substantial transmission investment cycle underway and demand for data centre capacity accelerating, Techno Electric is positioning its engineering capabilities across both conventional power infrastructure and the rapidly expanding digital infrastructure ecosystem.
